Session Overview

During our 90 minute (1.5 hours) session, participants will take part in a range activities designed to demonstrate how to safely apply a range of practical skills.  These activities are adaptable to suit age and need and will be planned accordingly prior to the day of your booking.  Read on for a more detailed look at the activities we provide, what to wear on the day and the members of our team who will run you session.

Activities

Bushcraft

On arrival, participants will be given a quick tutorial on how to make a tree cookie pendant.  The session lead will give a sawing demonstration and show participants how to use a palm drill.

Knot Tying

There are hundreds of types of knot out there but many of us only know 1 or 2.  A short section of the session will be used to teach participants some simple but useful knots which will later assist in the making of swings & shelters.

Shelter Building

The group will be split into 2 teams to set up camp.  Each team will be challenged with making a shelter that must meet certain criteria.  The teams will the visit each others camps to see if they pass our little test.

Fire Building

The group will remain in their camps with a member of the FACE team who will give a quick fire safety talk while demonstrating how to light a small piece of cotton wool.  Then participants will have their own attempts.

Toasting Marshmallows

To round off the session, the group will come together to sit round our main fire pit where we will toast marshmallows and make S'mores (a marshmallow sandwiched between 2 biscuits).

Appropriate Clothing

British guidebook author and illustrator Alfred Wainwright famously said “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”. In cold and wet conditions it is essential participants wear warm and waterproof clothing to protect them from the elements.

Waterproofs

It is advised that participants wear a raincoat, waterproof trousers or jumpsuit to not only protect them from the elements but to shield them from minor scratches and abrasions.

Footwear

Keeping our feet dry is not only good for our physical wellbeing but our emotional wellbeing.  We advise participants to wear wellies or winter boots to protect their feet from outdoor elements and weather.

Extras

Keeping dry is one thing, keeping warm is another.  Wearing multiple layers as well as hats and gloves all contribute to keeping our bodies warm.  Better to have it and take it off than not have it at all.

The Team

FACE prides itself on employing enthusiastic and motivated people who want to consistently deliver high quality sessions to ensure client satisfaction.  We have been lucky enough to employ a variety of people with a wide range of skills.  One of our survival skills leads will be there to ensure the smooth running of your session.
